“There’s a misconception about humor that it’s an innate ability, that you’re either able to do it or you’re not. But, it’s my belief that humor is a skill…it can be learned.” – Andrew Tarvin

Humor is a great skill no matter who you are. It’s a particularly valuable tool for business people. If we can make people laugh, or at least entertain them a bit, we can use that skill to achieve all kinds of goals. We can build rapport, get people to pay attention, help them to understand complex topics, and boost energy in meetings.

Unfortunately, many people avoid it because they think they’re not funny.

However, Andrew Tarvin believes that everyone has the potential to be funny, or at least funnier. He’s spent the past decade studying the science of humor. He joins me on this episode of Same Side Selling to discuss how humor works and how anyone can learn to use it. You’re going to learn a ton from our conversation!

Listen to this episode and discover:

  • Why everyone has the capacity for humor.
  • How humor can be utilized to achieve better business results.
  • Some techniques you can use to build your humor muscle.
  • And so much more…

Episode Overview

Andrew Tarvin is a bestselling author and a self-described “humor engineer”. He’s worked with companies like Proctor & Gamble, GE, Microsoft, and others, teaching employees how to perform better while having more fun.

Additionally, Andrew has performed over 1,000 shows as a standup comedian.

In this episode, Andrew talks about:

  • Why some people are afraid to use humor at work (or in life).
  • The science of humor and comedy.
  • How (and why) Andrew learned to make people laugh.
  • Four styles of humor that can be employed in the workplace.
  • When and where to use comedy most effectively.

“In today’s overworked, underappreciated, stress-filled, sleep-deprived world, humor is a must-have,” Andrew says, “We spend far too much time at work not to enjoy the process a little bit.” Now more than ever, humor is a valuable skill for sellers and other businesspeople. Luckily, everyone has the ability to be humorous, even if they aren’t used to being the funniest person in the room.

So, if you feel like you lack the ability to make people laugh, don’t worry! Tune in for some tips from Andrew Tarvin on this episode of Same Side Selling!
